Three-time Pulitzer winner Thomas L. Friedman has signed with longtime publisher FSG for a new book, Green is the New Red, White and Blue: A Manifesto. Jonathan Galassi bought North American rights from Esther Newberg at ICM, and Paul Elie will edit. The book will explore how and why green has gone “Main Street” in recent years, and what it will take to further entrench the green movement not just in America, but in China, India and the developing world.

Energy efficiency and environmentalism have been an increasing focus of Friedman’s. A New York Times column titled “Green: The New Red, White and Blue” appeared in January 2006. More recently, this April a lengthy piece by Friedman on green ideology appeared in The New York Times Magazine, and a documentary titled “Green: The New Red, White and Blue,” featuring Friedman’s reporting on green technology, premiered on the Discovery Channel the same month.

Friedman’s most recent book, The World is Flat, spent two years on the Times bestseller list and has sold over 2,300,000 copies. It’s just out in paperback from Picador. Pub date for the new book is August 5, 2008.
