Michelle Obama has inked a deal to write a book about the garden she planted on the South Lawn of the White House for Crown. The book, which is currently untitled, is scheduled for April 2012 and will explore the much-covered patch on the White House grounds where the First Lady has focused on bringing the public a broader message about the importance of access to locally grown food.

Maya Mavjee acquired world (along with first and second serial, and e-book) rights to the book from lawyer Robert Barnett. Crown said the First Lady did not take an advance for the title and is donating proceeds from it to a charity that will be named at a later date. The book will be a four-color hardcover--Tina Constable, senior v-p, publisher, Crown Archetype, will oversee publication working with Clarkson Potter publisher Lauren Shakely -- and feature photos of the garden throughout the year. Crown will also be releasing, simultaneous to the hardcover publication, an enhanced e-book edition as well as a standard e-book edition.
