  • Wi2023: ABA's Winter Institute Has Big Turnout

    The American Booksellers Association's Winter Institute in Seattle attracted a total of 1,600 people, of which 900 were booksellers. The large number of new booksellers drew an enthusiastic response from exhibitors, while the ABA urged booksellers to contribute more data to help it in its advocacy.

  • Print Book Sales Fell 8.8% Last Week

    With sales falling in all but the adult fiction category, unit sales of print books had their worst week in 2023, falling 8.8% last week from a year ago.

    Bookstore sales finished just under $9 billion in 2022, 6.2% higher than 2021 and 0.7% above 2019, the last year bookstores had a normal sales pattern before business was disrupted by the pandemic.

    With sales of Prince Harry’s 'Spare' slowing, unit sales of print books fell 4.2% last week compared to the week ended January 29, 2022 at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. The decline put an end to a two-week sales rally spurred by 'Spare.'
