    Joyce Meskis, the long-time owner of Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver, has died. She was 80 years old. Meskis was known as an innovative indie bookseller and a champion of free speech.

  • Print Book Sales Dropped 6.4% Last Week

    Unit sales of print books rose 15.5% last week over the previous week, but were still down 6.4% from the comparable week last year at outlets that report to NPD BookScan.

  • Booksellers, Friends Raise Money for Ukraine

    Unit sales of print books had one of their best weeks of the year last week, but it wasn’t quite enough to top sales from a year ago. As a result, unit sales fell 4.1%, marking one of the smallest declines this fall.

  • Bookstore Sales Slipped in October

    Bookstore sales fell 2.9% in October compared to 2021, falling to $636 million from $655 million last year, according to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

  • Amazon to End Print Textbook Rentals, Overhaul Magazine and Newspaper Subscriptions

    Amazon is discontinuing its print textbook rental program, and will phase out print and digital magazine and newspaper subscriptions as well, though some magazines and newspapers will remain available through Kindle Unlimited.

    Unit sales or print books fell 17.3% in the week ended December 3, 2022, from the week ended December 4, 2021, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. The sales total represented an increase over the previous week in 2021, but it is becoming clear that the holidays will not give a significant boost over seasonal sales in 2021. Unit sales through the week ended December 3, 2022, were down 6.6% compared to a year ago, but up 12% from 2019.

    The weekend after Thanksgiving, indie bookstores across the country were filled with crowds of eager shoppers and the merry sounds of cash registers ringing up sales in spite of concerns about rising prices.

    While Thanksgiving week provided a solid sales boost over the week ended November 19, 2022, the increase was not enough to lift unit sales of print books over the week ended November 27, 2021, with total unit sales falling 10.3% from Thanksgiving 2021.
