The American Booksellers Association came closer to its goal of providing a seamless digital reading experience through local independent bookstores with the December 1 launch of the IndieBound Reader. Almost exactly a year ago ABA entered the e-bookselling arena by partnering with Google e-books so that member stores with IndieCommerce sites can sell e-books online.

“With the release of IndieBound Reader, independent bookstores are taking another major step forward as players on the digital stage,” said ABA technology director Matt Supko in a prepared statement. “The IndieBound Reader app gives independent bookstores a home on the most popular mobile devices, making it easier than ever for customers to shop local when they shop digital.”

The app, which was developed by Bluefire Productions, is compatible with devices that use the Android operating system, including Samsung Galaxy Tab and Droid smartphones by Motorola, and can be downloaded at IndieBound.org and Android Market. ABA plans to launch a similar app for iPhones and other IOS devices soon.

The association has yet to work out an agreement to sell an e-reading device, which could give independents an even greater edge on the digital playing field.
