Other bookstores may go all out for big anniversaries divisible by five like their 40th. But not Powell’s Books in Portland, Ore., which may be just one more reason that the “City of Books” stands out. To mark its 41st, Powell’s is celebrating from now through the end of the year. The festivities get underway with a downtown block party on August 25 with authors Chuck Palahniuk, Chelsea Cain, and Lidia Yuknavitch; two stages of music; and a performance by the NW Children’s Theatre.

"We are excited to celebrate this milestone for Powell’s, and we hope our wonderful customers and the Portland community will have a fun-filled day," says CEO Emily Powell. Proceeds will benefit Portland’s Independent Publishing Resource Center.

The following week, from August 29-31, the three Powell’s bookstores at PDX (Portland International Airport) will hold festivities for travelers.
