Indies First on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 28): More than 400 independent bookstores will participate in this national campaign for the third year in a row on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Binnacle Books Opens in Beacon, N.Y.: The mostly used Main Street bookstore owned by Kate Ryan, Annmarie Nye and Corey Eastwood held its soft opening last weekend.

Scrawl Opens in Reston, Va.: Long-time library employee Rachel Wood is planning a “petite” grand opening on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 28) for the 100 sq. ft. bookstore on Urban Pop, a row of small stores at Reston Station.

Walls of Books to Open Soon in D.C.: Pabla Sierra plans to open the newest store in the used bookstore franchise on December 12.

Good-Will Christian Bookstore in Pottsville to Close: At year’s end owner Ray Mussen plans to retire and close the 65-year-old bookstore, which has had 15 years of declining sales.

Used Bookstore Closing in Roanoke: December 22 will be the last day for Paperback Phoenix (previously named Paperback Exchange). Former employees Paige Markham-Jentsch and her mother, Linda Markham, purchased the business last year.

New Owner for Merritt Bookstore in Millbrook, N.Y.: In the wake of founder Scott Meyer’s death this summer, Kira Wizner has purchased the bookstore. Meyer’s widow, Alison Meyer, will stay on and continue to produce the Millbrook Literary Festival.

Four Booksellers in Quarterfinals for Independent We Stand: Afterwords Books in Edwardsville, Ill.; From My Shelf Books & Gifts in Wellsboro, Pa.; Island Books in Mercer Island, Wash.; and Scout & Morgan Books in Cambridge, Minn., are among 25 semifinalists for the Independent Small Business of the Year Award, which was created in 2011.

Grand Reopening of Daybreak Press Global Bookshop in Minneapolis: Cyber Monday (Nov. 30) marks the grand reopening of the international bookstore, owned by Anse Tamara Gray, which had been based in St. Paul. The bookstore is associated with year-old Daybreak Press.
