R.J. Julia Booksellers has reached an agreement with Wesleyan University to manage the school’s new bookstore when it opens late next spring in downtown Middletown, Wesleyan’s hometown in Connecticut.
The 12,000 sq. ft. space will carry textbooks and trade titles, including a children’s section. An outside vendor will also operate a café.
Roxanne Coady, CEO and founder of R.J. Julia, which has its main store in Madison, Ct., said she was impressed by Wesleyan’s commitment to open a store that will serve both its students and the Middletown community. “Together we can create the kind of bookstore that will be the new standard for a college bookstore that is an integral, active member of its town,” Coady said. “We will bring our 30 years of experience as knowledgeable booksellers to create a vibrant author series and a place for discovery, enlightenment, entertainment, and contemplation. We are honored to be part of this exciting partnership.”
R.J. Julia already manages BookHampton in East Hampton, N.Y.
Commenting on the new store and is agreement with R.J. Julia, Wesleyan president Michael Roth said: “We’re committed to strengthening the ties between campus and Main Street.” “Relocating Wesleyan’s bookstore is a major step in the direction, and I am so delighted that R.J. Julia Booksellers, with their phenomenal reputation, will be our partner in this effort.”
