Barnes & Noble continues to open new stores at a rapid pace. The company announced that it plans to open 12 new outlets in November in California, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Utah, and Washington, D.C.
Some stores will occupy brand new locations, while others will replace older stores, per the bookseller. The new store in Murray, Ut., for example, is replacing a shop B&N closed a month ago. All the new stores will feature the company’s new design, which highlights books, toys, games and gifts; most also feature an updated B&N Café.
The November store openings are part of B&N’s plan to open 60 bookstores this year. The aggressive program comes after B&N opened about 30 outlets last year while closing approximately 20 stores, giving the retailer 609 stores at the end of 2023.
Earlier this year, B&N CEO James Daunt told PW he hoped to open 50 new outlets this year. The decision to increase that number comes as B&N reports that it is “experiencing strong sales in its existing stores.”
In addition to opening new outlets, this summer B&N paid $1.83 million to acquire Denver’s legendary Tattered Cover after the store filed for bankruptcy.
