CBLDF Benefit
The Comic Book Legal Defense is holding a benefit mashup with Cory Doctorow, author and co-editor of the blog, BoingBoing.net, and hip-hop experimentalist and theoretician Paul Miller a.k.a DJ Spooky on Thursday August 21 at the Helen Mills Theater in New York City. Doctorow will read from and discuss the issues surrounding his young adult novel Little Brother; DJ Spooky will present his new book/ literary mix tape, Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture. The two will also hold an open forum discussion after their individual presentations. Tickets for the event are available for $20 at the CBLDF website. Also, there will be an after party with DJ Spooky at Sutra Lounge located at 16 1st Avenue and 1st Street; admission is $10, or free with a pass from the mashup.

Viz releases Stan Lee Manga
Viz Media announced the debut of the prologue chapter of Ultimo in the September 2008 issue of Shonen Jump magazine. Ultimo is a collaboration between legendary American comic book writer Stan Lee and Japanese manga-ka Hiroyuki Takei, the creator of Shaman King. The Shonen Jump issue went on sale on August 5 and costs $4.99.

PW The Beat: Time Warner; Fans of 1974

Over at Heidi MacDonald’s comics industry blog, The Beat, she’s collected links and responses to a long New York Times piece about the impact of the Dark Knight film on Time Warner and Warner Bros. and, conspicuous by its absence from the piece, DC Comics. She also links to a trove of photographs of a New York Comic convention from 1974; efforts by Stan Lee, Joe Kubert and Neal Adams to assist a holocaust survivor to retrieve his artwork from a Holocaust Museum in Poland; and links to obituaries for Archie Comics chairman Michael Silberkleit and Tolkien illustrator Pauline Baynes.

Doug Wright Awards

The 2008 Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning were presented over the weekend in Toronto. The Magical Life of Long Tack Samby Ann Marie Fleming (Riverhead Book) was named best book; Jeff Lemire won the prize for best emerging talent for his booksEssex County Vol. 1 Tales From The Farm & Vol. 2 Ghost Stories (Top Shelf); and the Pigskin Peter Award for experimental work went to Julie Morstad for Milk Teeth (Drawn and Quarterly).

NYAF Cosplay Day at Kinokuniya

The New York Anime Festival announced a Cosplay Day will be held at NYC’s Kinokuniya Bookstore on Sunday August 17, NYAF is partnering with Del Ray Manga and Samurai Beat Radio for the event. The event will showcase the Japanese world of Cosplay and the World Cosplay Summit, an international Cosplay convention in Nagoya, Japan. The USA team from the World Cospaly Summit, Sonnya Paz and Renee Gloger, will be special guests at Cosplay Day. The schedule for Cosplay Day can be found at the NYAF blog.

FLCL Ultimate Defect

Synch-Point, a division of Broccoli International, announced a disc defect in the 4th printing of the FLCL Ultimate Edition Box Set. The error apparently occurs on Disc 1, and the DVD freezes after five minutes. If anyone is experiencing problems they are encouraged to email with the subject title of “FLCL Ult ED Disc 1 Issue.” More information can be found at the Sync-Point blog.

Stephen King’s The Stand

The first issue of Marvel’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand: Captain Trips will be released on September 10 at 12:01 a.m. at participating comics stores. The Stand is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrated by Mike Perkins. A trailer of the comic can be seen at the Marvel website, along with other information about series.

Mark Millar, Tony Harris at Midtown Comics

Mark Millar and Tony Harris will be signing books at Midtown Comics in New York City on Saturday August 16. This will be the first event in their “War Heroes: Tour of Duty” signing tour. The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.; Midtown Comics is located at 200 West 40th Street.
