SPX 2007 Opens
The 2007 Small Press Expo (SPX) will be held October 12-13th in Bethesda, Maryland at the North Bethesda Marriott Convention Center. This year’s guests at SPX are Bill Griffith, Jeff Smith, Matt Wagner, Gilbert Hernandez, Rutu Modan, and Kim Deitch. SPX will be open to the public from 2 pm to 8 PM on Friday and from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday; the admission cost is $8 for a single day and $15 for both days. Also, the 11th Annual Ignatz Awards will be held Saturday night at 9 pm; admission to the awards ceremony is free to all SPX attendees. All profits from SPX go the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Imaginova Acquires Newsarama
Imaginova, a digital media company, has acquired Newsarama.com, the popular daily comics trade news site and fan community. Imaginova is also the parent company of such tech-oriented sites as LiveScience.com and Space.com and the acquisition of Newsrama marks the company’s move into genre entertainment. Senior editors Michael Doran and Matt Brady will join Imaginova’s editorial staff and will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of Newsrama.com.

Brawl Release Party
Dean Haspiel and Michel Fiffe of the online collective Act-I-Vate will be signing copies of the first issue of their split-book, Brawl, at Jim Hanley's Universe on Wednesday October 10th from 6pm to 8 pm. Other guests will include Mike Cavallaro, Tim Hamilton, and Bob Fingerman. Jim Hanley's Universes located at 4 West 33rd Street. Rutu Modan Book Tour
Rutu Modan will tour this October for her book Exit Wounds with stops in Washington DC, Bethesda, MD at SPX, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, and New York. More information about dates and locations of tour events can be found at the Drawn & Quarterly website.

Seven Seas' Otaku Contest
Seven Seas Entertainment is holding a contest to prove if you are an Otaku. To enter the contest one must send a photo of your collection to iotakucontest@gomanga.com. The grand prize winner will receive an original full color I, Otaku illustration signed by the creator, Jiro Suzuki, and ten of the latest Seven Seas Entertainment manga. Runners up will receive a copy of I, Otaku: Struggle in Akihabara Vol. 1. More information about the contest can be found at the Seven Seas website.

Juicy Mother Release Party
There will be a release party for Juicy Mother Volume 2 Saturday October 13th at 7pm at Bluestockings (172 Allen Street between Rivington and Stanton). There will also be an after party at The Slipper Room (167 Orchard Street at Stanton) at 9:30 pm; there is a $5 cover. Juicy Mother is an anthology of stories about queer life from new perspectives. Contributors from the second volume who will be at the release party include Jennifer Camper, Diane DiMassa, Chitra Ganesh, David Hooper, and many others. Superheroes in Society Panel
The Montclair Art Museum will be holding a panel on October 13th at 7 pm, “Superheroes and Society,” in conjunction with the exhibit, “Reflecting Culture: The Evolution of American Comic Book Superheroes.” The panel will include Danny Fingeroth, author of Superman on the Couch: what Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society; Tom DeFalco, former Marvel editor-in-chief; and Dennis O'Neil. The Panel will be moderated by Michael Uslan, the executive producer of Batman Begins and the consultant for the exhibit. More information can be found at the Montclair Art Museum website.
