New York’s The Strand Bookstore Celebrates Comics

The Strand, the famed New York City independent bookstore, is presenting, StrandiCon, a one-day event on April 8 to celebrate the recent redesign and relaunch of The Comics Journal, the indie comics world’s venerable journal of news and criticism, as well as the comics medium. The afternoon StrandiCon will feature a panel discussion devoted to the new TCJ featuring TCJ and Fantagraphics founder Gary Groth and new TCJ editors Dan Nadel and Tim Hodler. The event will also feature panels focusing on cartoonists Jillian Tamaki, Ben Katchor, Dash Shaw, Brecht Evans, Joe Ollman and more.

Kodansha Announces the Return of Sailor Moon

Hit shoujo manga Sailor Moon, which originally came out in the US as one of Tokyopop's flagship titles at the beginning of the manga boom, is returning to the USA in an all-new edition from Kodansha. Their new Sailor Moon line will also include the prequel Code Name Sailor V, which has never been published in the US before.

Doug Wright and Reuben Award Nominations

The 2011 nominations for the awards for Canada's Doug Wright Award for the best Canadian comics creators working in any country and the Reuben Awards from the National Cartoonists Society have been announced are now open for voting. More details are available here and here.

Comics Industry Helps Japan's Recovery Effort

In the wake of Japan's devastating earthquake, the comics and manga industry has been doing its part. Eisner-winning comics artist James Jean has produced a special edition silk scarf with all proceeds going to the Red Cross, and the founders of Yaoi-Con are holding a charity auction, and Viz is making major donations, while Tokyopop's founder Stu Levy is on the ground in Japan pitching in.

R. Crumb Special Exhibit at the Society of Illustrators in NYC

Acclaimed underground comics creator Robert Crumb's work will appear in a special exhibit at New York's Society of Illustrators. The 90-peice retrospective will premiere in an opening night party on March 24 from 7 -10 p.m. Crumb himself will be in attendance. The exhibit runs from March 23– April 30, Tuesdays 10-8, Wednesdays-Fridays 10-5 and Saturdays 12-4. The Society of Illustrators is located at 128 E. 63rd St., New York, NY.
