Sammy Harkham’s Everything Together: Collected Stories (PictureBox) has been awarded the L.A Times Book Prize for Graphic Novels. The award highlights the comics fiction of Harkham, who is probably best known as the editor of the award-winning indie comics anthology Kramers Ergot and the creator of the comics series Crickets.
Harkham’s Everything Together: Collected Stories won this year’s L.A. Times Book Prize for Graphic Novels over a field of nominees that included Alison Bechdel’s Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), Chris Ware’s Building Stories (Pantheon), the late Spain Rodriquez’s Cruisin’ With the Hound: the Life and Times of Fred Toote (Fantagraphics) and Leela Corman’s Unterzakhn (Shocken).
The PW review called Everything Together: Collected Stories “a stunning collection.” The book includes such stories as “Somersaulting,” a long story about two disaffected Australian teenagers, and “Poor Sailor,” the tale of sailor who goes off to sea and suffers mightily while there. PW called “Poor Sailor,” “a curiously effective little masterpiece of mood.”
