Lolita Fashion at NYAF
The New York Anime Festival announced that designers from Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, a Japanese Lolita fashion brand, will be guests of honor at this years show. While at the event, designers Miho Satoh and Masumi Kanoh will speak about the history and philosophy of their brand, host a Baby, The Stars Shine Bright boutique, and invite fans to a tea party with them. The New York Anime Festival will be held September 26-28 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

Online Symposium on Reading Comics
The Valve blog is hosting a symposium on Douglas Wolk’s book Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean (Da Capo Press). Various participants are posting their analysis and impressions of Wolk’s book which won an Eisner Award at the recent San Diego Comic-con. Wolk is a longtime PW contributing editor for comics.

Third Volume of Plain Janes
Cecil Castellucci announced on her blog that there will be a third volume of ThePlain Janes, titled Janes Go Summer. The Plain Janes is published by DC/Minx.

Obama and McCain Bios from IDW
IDW Publishing is releasing biographies on the two presidential candidates: Presidential Material: Barack Obama and Presidential Material: John McCain. The 28 page books will be released on October 8, and will also be released via mobile phones through Uclick’s GoComics. The Obama book is written by Jeff Mariotte with art by Tom Morgan; the McCain book is written by Andy Helfer and drawn by Stephan Thompson. More information can be found at the IDW website.

Fantagraphics August Events
The Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery will be hosting various events in August. An exhibition of work by French cartoonist David B. will be up from August 2 - 25; there will be a reception for the show on August 25, from 6 to 9 PM, where the David B. will be signing books. On Friday August 29, there will be a reception with Daniel Clowes for the release of Ghost World: The Special Edition. Also, an exhibit of Daniel Clowes work will be up from August 29 to October 7. David B. from NBM
NBM is releasing David B.’s Nocturnal Conspiracies: Nineteen Dreams in October. Nocturnal Conspiracies explores nineteen of David B.’s dreams. The book is 128 pages and will cost $14.95. More information and a preview of the book can be found at the NBM website.

Typhon Signing at Jim Hanley’s
Jim Hanley’s Universe will be hosting a release party and book signing for Typhon Vol. 1, a new comics anthology, on Wednesday August 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. Typhon contributors who will be present include Gregory Benton, Victor Cayro, Mike Edison, Glenn Head, Danny Hellman, Cliff Mott, Bruno Nadalin, Chris Norris, R. Sikoryak, Doug Skinner, Matthew Thurber, and Motohiko Tokuta. Also, a preview of Typhon can be seen at Danny Hellman’s website.

Sam Henderson at Desert Island
The Desert Island comics shop in Williamsburg, NY is hosting a release party for Sam Henderson’s Magic Whistle #11 on August 15th. Henderson will be signing books. The event starts at 6 PM, and admission is free. Desert Island is located at 540 Metropolitan Ave. in Brooklyn, NY.
