Movies opening today:

Charlie St. Cloud, directed by Burr Steers and starring Zac Efron, Amanda Crew, Ray Liotta, Donal Logue, and Kim Basinger. It’s based on the Ben Sherwood novel The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud (Bantam mti, 978-0553584028, $7.99), which PW found “warmhearted but not maudlin, exploring the bonds between the living and the dead and the lengths to which we'll go for love.”

The Extra Man, directed by Sharon Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, starring Katie Holmes, John C. Reilly, Paul Dano, and Kevin Kline, and based on Jonathan Ames’s novel The Extra Man (Scribner mti, 978-1439196496, $15). PW wrote “this narrative maintains its sense of humor even in the most straightened, kinky or depressing circumstances. If the resolution is a bit mechanical, the novel's comic atmosphere is otherwise admirably sustained.”

Authors on today’s Oprah re-broadcast:

Julie Metz, author of Perfection: A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal (Voice, 978-1401322557, $23.99), which PW called a “dark and affecting memoir.”

Karen Weinreb, author of The Summer Kitchen (St. Martin's, 978-0312640545, $14.99).

Authors on this weekend’s Book TV:

Matt Gallagher, author of Kaboom: Embracing the Suck in a Savage Little War (Da Capo Press, 978-0306818806, $24.95), which PW considered a “hauntingly direct war memoir. He provides much canny, moving commentary on the power of war to transform soldiers and civilians.”

Cait Murphy introduces Scoundrels in Law: The Trials of Howe and Hummel, Lawyers to the Gangsters, Cops, Starlets, and Rakes Who Made the Gilded Age (Smithsonian, 978-0061714283, $26.99).

Former U.S. Navy officer David Sears recalls Such Men as These: The Story of the Navy Pilots Who Flew the Deadly Skies over Korea (Da Capo Press, 978-0306818516, $25).

Stephen Kiernan displays Authentic Patriotism: Restoring America's Founding Ideals through Selfless Action (St. Martin's, 978-0312379117, $25.99). PW declared “the author constructs a stirring argument against apathy and for engagement.”

William Hogeland, author of Declaration: The Nine Tumultuous Weeks When America Became Independent, May 1 to July 4, 1776 (S&S, 978-1416584094, $26). PW thought “This brief, fair study provides a sound analysis of events and a revelatory portrayal of the men who made America free.”

Talk show host Ed Schultz, whose book is Killer Politics: How Big Money and Bad Politics Are Destroying the Great American Middle Class (Hyperion, 978-1401323783, $25.99).
