Movies opening today:

Twelve, directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Emma Roberts, Chace Crawford, Kiefer Sutherland, Ellen Barkin, 50 Cent, and Zoë Kravitz. It’s based on Nick McDonell’s YA novel Twelve (Grove Press mti, 978-0802144676, $14), which PW declared a “shocker of a first novel. And although it brims with New York references, this is really a story about excess and its effects.”

In limited release, the movie Flipped (releasing nationwide on August 27), directed by Rob Reiner. Starring Callan McAuliffe, Madeline Carroll, Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, Penelope Ann Miller, Aidan Quinn, and John Mahoney, it’s based on Wendelin Van Draanen's critically acclaimed YA novel Flipped (Knopf Books for Young Readers mti, 978-0375863479, $8.99), which PW called an “enticing story, relayed alternately by eighth graders Bryce and Juli. With a charismatic leading lady kids will flip over, a compelling dynamic between the two narrators and a resonant ending, this novel is a great deal larger than the sum of its parts.”

Tonight, Tavis Smiley re-airs a conversation with bestseller David Shenk, author of The Genius in All of Us: Why Everything You've Been Told About Genetics, Talent, and IQ Is Wrong (Doubleday, 978-0385523653, $26.95; RH Audio unabridged CD, $30).

This weekend on Book TV's After Words:

Richard Whittle discusses The Dream Machine: The Untold History of the Notorious V-22 Osprey (S&S, 978-1416562955, $27; Tantor CD, $29.99).

Akbar Ahmed, author of Journey into America: The Challenge of Islam (Brookings Inst. Press, 978-0815703877, $29.95).
