Movies opening today:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Kieran Culkin. It’s based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series, which includes Vol. 2: Scott Pilgrim Versus The World (Oni Press, 978-1932664126, $11.99). PW starred its review: “The narrative jumps, combined with sharp, sardonic dialogue, make this a great oddball tale that captures the energy of a generation.”

Eat, Pray, Love, directed by Ryan Murphy, starring Julia Roberts, Richard Jenkins, Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, and Billy Crudup, and based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia (Penguin mti, 978-0143118428, $16; Penguin Audio unabridged CD, $39.95). From PW’s starred review: “Gilbert fully engages readers in the year's cultural and emotional tapestry--conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor--as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression.”

Authors on today’s Leonard Lopate Show:

Annie Cohen-Solal recalled Leo and His Circle: The Life of Leo Castelli (Knopf, 978-1400044276, $35), which PW’s starred review declared “fleshes out not only a fascinating portrait of Castelli but also the excitement of the developing American art world to which he was so central.”

New Yorker staff writer David Grann, author of The Devil and Sherlock Holmes: Tales of Murder, Madness, and Obsession (Doubleday, 978-0385517928, $26.95; RH Audio unabridged CD, $40).

Tonight, Tavis Smiley talks with chef, TV show host and writer Anthony Bourdain about Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook (Ecco, 978-0061718946, $26.99).

This weekend on Book TV's After Words, Daily Beast and Time contributor Peter Beinart explains The Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris (Harper, 978-0061456466, $27.99), which PW called a “perceptive study of foreign policy over-reach.”
