As part of its partnership with the social activist film production company Participant Media, PublicAffairs is releasing a companion title to filmmaker Davis Guggenheim’s forthcoming documentary on U.S. public education, Wating for ‘Superman’, that will also allow the purchaser to make a donation to the school of their choice through DonorsChoose.org. Waiting For ‘Superman’ , which will open in October, is a documentary on the continuing failure of the American public education system to adequately educate children.

When a consumer purchases a copy of the companion volume to Waiting For ‘Superman,’ each book will include a unique code that they can enter on DonorsChoose.org and have $15 donated to the school or their choice. PublicAffairs, which specializes in serious nonfiction, entered into an agreement in 2009 with Participant Media, which has produced such politically focused films as an Inconvenient Truth (also directed by Guggenheim) and Syriana, to produce companion books that not only provide background on the making of the film but information on the social issues explored in the film as well as outlining a participatory role for the public.

“When I first saw Waiting for ‘Superman’,”I was outraged and inspired,” said Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org. “It’s for these teachers that I started DonorsChoose.org, an online nonprofit that enables anyone to connect to a public school classroom in a personal and direct way.”
