After 10 years with Perseus Books Group's Basic Books imprint, most recently as publisher, John Sherer, is leaving the company for a position in academic publishing. Sherer has accepted a job as director of University of North Carolina Press. The new post, Perseus said, will allow him to get back to his "North Carolina roots and family."
With Sherer's departure, Lara Heimert, who was editorial and publisher director of Basic, moves into the role of publisher, and Clive Priddle, former editorial director at PublicAffairs, has been promoted to publisher of the imprint. Susan Weinberg has also been named to a new position, jumping from publisher of PublicAffairs to group publisher for Basic Books, Nation Books and PublicAffairs. In the new organization, Priddle and Heimert will both report to Weinberg. In a final change, Bill Newlin, Avalon publisher, will now oversee Westview Press with Westview publisher Cathleen Tetro now reporting to him.
Sherer, whose last day at Perseus will be July 13, began at Basic as marketing manager and, for the last five years, was publisher.
