Macmillan Publishers has announced that former Crown Publishing Group president and publishers Maya Mavjee will be joining the company on March 1. Her title is president, publishing strategy, and she will be reporting to John Sargent, CEO of Macmillan.
According to Macmillan, in this newly formed role, Mavjee will be working closely with Sargent, Andrew Weber, global COO of Macmillan Publishers, and Don Weisberg, president of Macmillan Publishers US. She will work on all aspects of publishing across the company, focusing, Macmillan said, on publishing strategy and the overall growth and development of Macmillan's programs.
In addition, Mavjee will acquire books to be published across Macmillan’s publishing houses, and will also assume responsibility for the company’s central digital marketing and communications groups, as well as the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts. Wibke Grutjen, v-p of digital marketing, and Erin Coffey, v-p of communications, events and community services, will report to Mavjee
Mavjee led the Crown Publishing Group from 2010 to 2018, leaving at the end of 2018 when Crown was merged with the Random House Publishing Group under Gina Centrello. “Maya brings a wealth of experience to this new role and will have a broad mandate,” said Sargent in a statement. “She is a huge talent, and I am sure she will make us better at everything we do.”
“I am excited to be joining the Macmillan team,” said Mavjee. “I have long admired the publishing programs, authors, talent and leadership of the company and look forward to the opportunities ahead.”
