Mary Beth Jarrad, the longtime marketing and sales director at NYU Press, has joined the New Press as publisher. She succeeds Ellen Adler, PW’s 2021 Person of the Year, who stepped down late last month after a distinguished 21-year career at the press.

“Mary Beth is beloved and respected throughout the industry, and we feel lucky to have her joining The New Press team,” Diane Wachtell, executive director of the New Press, said in a statement.

At NYU, Jarrad oversaw both marketing and third party licensing operations, in addition to her work on numerous publicity campaigns and other projects. Prior to her tenure at NYU, she served a short stint at Penguin Random House as senior director of international sales and marketing following nearly a decade in university press publishing in multiple positions at Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press.

“The authors who publish with the New Press are scholars, activists, movement leaders, and changemakers,” Jarrad said. “I look forward to supporting their efforts to building a more equitable world by bringing their work to a diverse range of readers.”
