  • Publishing Gains Support at Kickstarter

    Last year was a big one for publishing on Kickstarter. The Web site is the most popular crowdfunding online destination, with 1,666 projects successfully funded in the publishing category, and a total of $11,057,252 pledged. In addition, $8,482,598 was raised for comics, which are listed as a separate category. Altogether, $19.5 million was raised for publishing-related projects.

    Follett has announced includED, a new program that will provide students with all required course materials as part of tuition or fees. The model has been gaining momentum as the cost of higher education continues to rise and students struggle to pay for their materials, or even go without.

    Minnesota Historical Society Press has launched a new digital imprint of short form e-books called MHS Express, which will include essays on regional topics, as well as excerpts from recent or forthcoming releases and original e-book shorts.

  • Tracking Amazon: Saunders, Newbery & Caldecott Winners Rise

    Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan, Jon Klassen's This Is Not My Hat and George Saunders's Tenth of December all jumped into Amazon's top 10 bestsellers on January 30. The first two titles clearly benefited from winning the Newbery and Caldecott awards, respectively, earlier this week. Saunders's short story collection jumped to #7 following his appearance on The Colber Report on January 29. Overall, The One and Only Ivan saw the greatest rise, hitting #2 overall, behind only The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia.

  • Amazon: E-book Sales Soared, Print Crawled

    Jeff Bezos: “After 5 years, eBooks is a multi-billion dollar category for us and growing fast – up approximately 70% last year. In contrast, our physical book sales experienced the lowest December growth rate in our 17 years as a book seller, up just 5%.”

  • Redhook Ready

    Redhook, Hachette’s new commercial fiction imprint, has released its logo and launch list.

  • HarperCollins Moving HQ Downtown

    HarperCollins will be pulling up stakes in mid-town Manhattan and move its headquarters to the financial district in spring 2014. The publisher, currently located on 53rd St. in New York, said Friday afternoon that it had signed a lease for office space at 195 Broadway.

  • Stephen King Tackles Gun Violence in Kindle Single

    On January 25, Stephen King published a Kindle Single called "Guns," an essay about gun violence in the United States and possible solutions.

  • RosettaBooks Completes Record Year

    E-book pioneer RosettaBooks had it best year ever in 2012 with sales up more than 80% and the company said it paid out more than $2 million in royalties to authors and other rights holders.

  • It Books to Publish New Robert Evans Memoir

    It Books announced today its plans to publish, in the summer of 2013, a new memoir by Hollywood producer Robert Evans, and to republish his autobiography, The Kid Stays in the Picture. The books will be published both in print and in a digital multimedia edition.

  • S&S Combines Scribner and Touchstone Publicity

    Simon & Schuster has combined the Scribner and Touchstone publicity departments, both of which will now report to Brian Belfiglio, v-p, director of publicity, effective February 19. As a result of the reorganization, Marcia Burch, v-p, director of publicity for Touchstone, is leaving the company on February 15.

  • Drake Rises at Crown; Palgon Departs

    In the latest realignment at Random House's Crown Publishing Group, David Drake has been promoted to senior v-p and deputy publisher and, among other changes, Michael Palgon, current executive v-p and deputy publisher, is leaving.

  • Vantage Authors Have Until End of Month to Get Rights

    Vantage Press, which closed down in December, has sent a letter to authors informing them that they have until January 31 to return an “Assignment & Release Agreement” if they want to get their rights back to their books.

  • OverDrive Adds Streaming Video and Audio for Libraries and Schools

    OverDrive has added streaming video and audio technology to its library service platform, improving ease of use and device compatibility for OverDrive-hosted video, audiobook and music collections at libraries and schools.

  • Amazon Touts Self-Publishing Benefits Front and Center

    This week, Amazon's home page began featuring a promotion for author Vincent Zandri and the success he's found through publishing on the Kindle platform after his book deal with a traditional publishing house fell through.
