  • Borders Sales Fall 12% in First Quarter

    First quarter sales fell 12.1% at Borders as comp store sales at its superstores dropped 13.5% leading to a 10.7% decline in overall superstore sales. Revenue at the Waldenbooks special group fell 19.9% as comps fell 5.5% and 11 stores were closed.

  • B&T, OverDrive Ink Digital Distribution Deal

    Baker & Taylor is teaming up with digital media distributor OverDrive in a longterm technology licensing agreement to distribute downloadable e-books, audio books, music, video and related content to Baker & Taylor customers.

  • HarperCollins UK Reorg Follows Ridout Departure

    HarperCollins UK managing director Amanda Ridout announced last week that she will be leaving the company at the end of June to “pursue other ventures.” Following Ridout’s notice, CEO and publisher Victoria Barnsley said the roles of MD of HarperCollins, MD of HarperFiction and MD of Harper NonFiction/Collins will be phased out in favor of a “flatter structure.”

  • Ingram Adds Ingram Digital to Newly Formed Ingram Content Group

    Ingram is moving Ingram Digital into the Ingram Content Group as part of its startegy to provide customers and clients with easier access to the company's print and digital services. Skip Prichard will head the newly combined company.

  • Beacon Press, King Estate to Announce Publishing Pact

    Beacon Press will hold a press conference next Wednesday to announce an agreement with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Estate to launch a new publishing program called, The King Legacy.

  • Meredith to Promote Cookbooks on Social Networking Site

    In January, Meredith Corporation quietly launched Mixing Bowl, a social networking site about cooking. Emphasizing user-generated content, the site invites home cooks to exchange recipes, share photos, participate in contests and post messages. Now, Meredith is beginning an aggressive marketing campaign for Mixing Bowl, start a companion print magazine—and start launching cookbook authors through the site.

  • Cooking the Books with the Neelys

    Pat and Gina Neely co-own two Neely's Bar-B-Que restaurants in Memphis and one in Nashville, and star in Down Home with the Neelys on the Food Network. Knopf published their first book, Down Home with the Neelys: A Southern Family Cookbook, earlier. They stopped in New York on their 13-city tour, and squeezed in a few minutes to talk to PW and offered a few tips for summertime grilling: have fun and don’t forget the cocktails.

  • Landesman Seen As Good Fit For NEA

    President Barack Obama's recent announcement that he will nominate 61-year-old Broadway producer Rocco Landesman, president of Jujamcyn Theaters, to chair the National Endowment for the Arts was met with enthusiasm by many independent presses, although most had never heard of him until his name was raised in mid-May.

  • New Site for Self-Published Books

    Public relations professional and author Amy Edelman is launching IndieReader.com, a Web site devoted to marketing and selling self-published books. The site will launch in early June and offers self-publishers their own Web page as well as 75% of the sales of their books—all for an annual fee and a “submissions” charge for each book selected for the site.

  • Books-A-Million Posts First-Quarter Gains

    Though comp store sales fell 1.1% in the first quarter, total revenue rose 2.0% at Books-A-Million, and earnings improved.

  • Kids, Cooking High on Marshall's To Do List for Borders

    At the bookstore chain's annual meeting, Borders CEO Ron Marshall said expanding the retailer's children's department was a top priority along with adding more cooking and health titles.

  • eMusic Adds Audiobooks from Recorded Books and HighBridge

    eMusic’s audiobook catalog has officially surpassed 7,000 titles. The expansion is due to new agreements to sell DRM-free audiobooks from Recorded Books and HighBridge Audio. eMusic has also recently added Sounds True, Gildan Media, Oasis Audio and PublicAffairs to its roster.

  • Sales Fall Less Than Expected at Barnes & Noble; Has Improved Outlook

    Comp store sales fell 5.7% at Barnes & Noble in the first quarter, slightly less than expected, and the company said it now believes same store sales for the full year will fall less than originally planned.

    Last month, Getty Publications laid off 10 employees, mostly in non-publishing areas such as the production of maps and brochures.

  • HarperOne's Little Black Book Now Online

    HarperOne is replacing the print version of The Little Black Book—its guide listing authors it publishes in the self-help, spirituality, personal growth and religion categories—with a free, searchable, online database.

  • OverDrive in Deal with ChineseAll

    The digital audiobook distributor is partnering with digital publisher ChineseAll to supply Chinese-language e-books and audiobooks to public libraries in North America. The collection will include more than 20,000 titles, with 8,000 e-books and 3,000 audiobooks to be available in the first year.
