As part of its commitment to lowering its carbon footprint, Random House has joined the SmartWay Transportation Partnership, a collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry. Launched in 2004, the goal of SmartWay is to reduce emissions by finding more efficient ways for shippers and transportation companies to work together. According to Kathy Booker, director/analyst, logistics for RH, the publisher will look to work with as many companies as possible that are in SmartWay to lower the environmental impact of RH’s shipping efforts. SmartWay currently has over 1,500 participants.

Companies can join SmartWay by performing an environmental assessment of their freight operations and by committing to improve that performance within three years. Once accepted into the program, the EPA provides the tools and materials to help companies determine their current environmental performance and help develop their individual improvement targets. Companies' performances are evaluated annually.
