Indigo’s e-book service, Shortcovers, has added 1.8 million titles from the Internet Archive available free of charge through the Shortcovers store. Internet Archive’s library includes public domain classics, academic works, reference materials, and other fiction and nonfiction titles. There are works in 180 languages, acquired from more than 200 library partners in five countries. Shortcovers users will also get access to Internet Archive’s new BookServer project on their smartphones, eReaders, and desktops.
Michael Tamblyn, v-p of content, sales and merchandising for Shortcovers, said, “Internet Archive has performed an incredible service for those who love the written word…. We want to do our part in making these titles available to as many readers as possible all over the world.”
The Internet Archive’s BookServer is working with publishing, digital book, and technology companies to create a new system where any library, bookstore, or publisher can make digital books available to anyone, without having to rely on one or two distributors.
