BAM Gets Leases; Finley Named President
Books-A-Million won court approval to take over the leases of 14 Borders locations and also named Terry Finley president, succeeding Clyde Anderson, who will remain chairman and CEO. BAM agreed to pay $934,000 for the leases. The new stores move BAM into new regions, including New England.
RH Sells Triumph Books
Random House has sold Triumph Books, the Chicago sports publisher it acquired in 2006, to its old publisher, Mitch Rogatz, and an unnamed private investor. Effective immediately, Triumph Books will be distributed by Independent Publishers Group.
Hottensen Returns to Grove
Judy Hottensen resigned as publisher of Weinstein Books and will return to Grove/ Atlantic September 6 as associate publisher. She will take over some of the responsibilities of Eric Price, who is retiring as COO and associate publisher. Hottensen worked at Grove from 1992 to 2005.
Until a replacement for Hottensen is found, Weinstein Books, part of Perseus, will be overseen by John Radziewicz, the publisher of Da Capo Press.
Ingram Launches Global Connect
Ingram Content Group launched Global Connect, a program that will allow publishers in any country to print and distribute titles in countries where Ingram or its partners have operations. Ingram also signed an agreement with Singular Digital, a Brazilian book manufacturer, to become its first Global Connect partner.
Jensen Wins PubWest Award
Chronicle Books president Jack Jensen has been awarded PubWest's 2011 Jack D. Rittenhouse Award for his lifetime of work with Chronicle Books, transforming it from a regional house to a global brand.
New Sony Tablets, E-readers
Sony announced it will release two tablet devices: the Tablet S, a 9.4–in. touchscreen device ($499) in September and, later in the year, the dual screen Tablet P (no pricing yet) with two 5.5-in. screens that fold into a larger format. Sony is also releasing the Reader Wi-Fi, a wireless-enabled 6-in. e-ink touchscreen e-reader, priced at $149 and available in October.
Tribble to Head Poisoned Pen Press
Jessica Tribble has been promoted to publisher at Poisoned Pen Press. She was previously associate publisher. Barbara Peters will remain editor-in-chief.
