Night Shade Books, which began selling its assets in April, has been officially acquired by Skyhorse Publishing and Start Publishing. The struggling science fiction press, which was launched in 1997, has a catalog of over 250 titles, with works by, among others, Shirley Jackson and Bram Stoker. The sale went through after a draw-out negotiation between authors and the press over terms.
In a press release about the acquisition, Skyhorse quoted one Night Shade author, giving his blessing to the deal. Michael J. Martinez, author of The Daedalus Incident said the sale has finally gone through "for the benefit of all involved, including authors and the great community of SF/F fans." Start's CEO, Michael Maher, added that Night Shade, which has been "at the forefront of science fiction and fantasy for years," will now, along with its authors, have "a platform to continue that tradition."
