Fulcrum Publishing has acquired the small, independent publisher Speck Press in a deal that adds about 20 titles in nonfiction and crime. Speck, founded in 2003 by Derek Lawrence, will become a Fulcrum imprint. Lawrence, who is currently a sales rep with Thomas McFadden & Associates, will join Fulcrum in September as associate publisher. Susan Hill Newton, a former editor with Speck, will also join Fulcrum to acquire new titles for the imprint.

Fulcrum has also reorganized its sales and marketing departments after giving up efforts to sell its list directly to accounts in favor of using commissioned rep groups. George Ecarma, eastern sales manager, has been named national book trade manager, while western sales manager Ingrid Estell has been named special and direct sales manager for a number of lines. In addition, Fulcrum has made three new hires: Karen Iker, formerly with Brookings Institution Press, is direct and special markets coordinator; former Fulcrum marketing director Melissa Ramey will rejoin the company as sub rights manager; and Susan Tangen, most recently with Powell’s, is special and direct sales manager for lifestyle and outdoor books.
