Flatiron Books will launch a new imprint, Pine & Cedar Books, in summer 2025. Flatiron executive editor Christine Kopprasch has been named VP and publisher of the imprint, which will publish “compulsively readable, story-driven novels” with a focus, per the publisher, on “compelling plot, originality, and potential to leave a lasting impact on its readers.”

Pine & Cedar’s inaugural list includes King of Ashes, the next novel from bestselling author S.A. Cosby, which Pine & Cedar bills as “a Black, Southern, Godfather-inspired crime epic.” The book is the first in a three-book deal, for world rights, between Pine & Cedar and Cosby, who was represented by HG Literary’s Josh Getzler. In its review of Cosby’s All the Sinners Bleed, PW called Cosby’s latest, which was published by Flatiron last year, a “superb thriller” and “easily the author’s strongest work to date,” in which Cosby “elegantly layers his narrative over Virginia’s racial history, giving the proceedings uncommon emotional depth.”

Cosby said it was “truly an honor to work with Christine,” adding: “Her instincts as an editor are unmatched in the industry and I am incredibly fortunate to have her in my corner. I can't think of a more qualified or visionary person to lead this new endeavor and I couldn't be happier to have Pine & Cedar be the home for my work.”

Also forthcoming from the imprint next summer is is We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough, marking the author's return to Flatiron, which published her 2017 bestseller Behind Her Eyes in 2017. The book was submitted exclusively to Flatiron, and the deal was inked in February. Titles to follow include This Story Might Save Your Life by Tiffany Crum, the first author at the imprint new to the Flatiron stable; Kopprasch won the book in a preempt and Pine & Cedar bills as “the rare novel that successfully combines a gripping, pace-driven thriller with the soul of an epic love story.” The publisher said there is no set number of titles that it plans to publish annually.

In addition to previously acquiring and editing books by both Cosby and Pinborough, Kopprasch has worked with such authors as Chandler Baker, Alice Feeney, Jane Harper, and Kate Alice Marshall. “I’m so excited to expand and deepen my work with my incredible authors, and to continue working with the amazing team at Flatiron Books,” Kopprasch said in a statement. “I love both discovering debuts and nurturing authors who have been previously published, and it’s been a joy to foster growth, long-term success, and important relationships by cultivating repeat authors. I’m so lucky to work on the types of books I love to read, which have a captivating story, are well-written with high commerciality, and often also have something larger to say about our world.”

The imprint announcement follows last week's news that Flatiron founder Bob Miller would leave Macmillan, with Deb Futter, president and publisher of Celadon Books, set to take on additional responsibilities as president and publisher of Flatiron. Megan Lynch was also promoted to EVP as part of the move, and is now overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day operations of Flatiron.
