Nadxieli Nieto will join Algonquin Books as editorial director, effective October 28. She will report to Little, Brown president and publisher Sally Kim.
Nieto moves to Algonquin from Flatiron Books, where she serves as executive editor. In her tenure at Flatiron, which she joined in 2020, she has acquired and edited such titles as María Amparo Escandón's L.A. Weather and Rasheed Newson's My Government Means to Kill Me, and her authors include Ben Austen, Erica Berry, Monica Brashears, Wendy Chin-Tanner, Manuel Gonzales, Jean Grae, Kaitlyn Greenidge, Marielene Hincapie, Jessica Hoppe, and Danté Stewart.
Prior to Flatiron, she was the director of PEN America's Literary Awards, where she helped nationalize the program and develop its debut short story award, the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize. At PEN, she also helped oversee the biennial PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, administered in conjunction with Algonquin. She holds an MFA in poetry from Syracuse University and is on the board of Latinx in Publishing.
Nieto's appointment follows a tumultuous several months at Algonquin as parent company Hachette Book Group completed its reorganization of Workman Publishing, which it acquired—along with Algonquin—in 2021. In July, HBG moved both of Algonquin's adult and children's groups under Little, Brown and in September announced a further restructuring of the adult group, which involved a number of layoffs including publisher Betsy Gleick.
At the time of the layoffs, Kim explained that due to changes in the consumer landscape and reader discoverability, HBG was "looking to redefine [Alonguin's] longstanding mission." In a letter announcing Nieto's appointment, Kim wrote that she expects Nieto to help her "guide the next exciting chapter of the group’s mission to give space and recognition to undiscovered voices—an integral part of Algonquin since its founding."
Nieto's appointment is also accompanied by several promotions at Algonquin. In editorial, Madeline Jones has been promoted to senior editor. Jones has been with Algonquin for nearly four years, during which time she has published Bora Chung's two novels, Cursed Bunny and Your Utopia, among several others. Additionally, Jovanna Brinck has been promoted to assistant editor. Brinck has spent nearly two years with Algonquin as the group's sole editorial assistant. Jones and Brinck will report to Nieto, as will executive editor Kathy Pories.
And in the publicity department, Marisol Salaman has been promoted to senior publicity manager, leading publicity strategy for all Algonquin titles and reporting to Little, Brown executive director of publicity Sabrina Callahan. Katrina Tiktinsky has been promoted to publicist. Tiktinsky has previously assisted on campaigns for Julia Alvarez and Ross Gay, and will report to Salaman.
