Penguin Publishing Group, the division of Penguin Random House, will acquire the publishing assets of Amber-Allen Publishing, the independent publisher of personal development books that has been a PRH Publishing Services distribution client since 2018.

Upon completion of the acquisition, the Amber-Allen list will be managed by the TarcherPerigee imprint, where the titles will remain published under the Amber-Allen name for the foreseeable future. Amber-Allen founder and president Janet Mills and CFO Tammy Fontenot will stay on as consultants “for a period of time,” per a PRH spokesperson.

Founded in 1990, Amber-Allen’s focus is on the self-help and mind-body-spirit categories, and it has published books by such authors as Deepak Chopra, Donald Epstein, and Jane Roberts. It is best-known for The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, part of its Toltec Wisdom series, which has sold more than 15 million copies and been translated into 52 languages since its 1997 publication.

“Amber-Allen, and especially the Toltec Wisdom series, has had a remarkable and enduring impact on the world,” said Tracy Behar, publisher of TarcherPerigee, in a statement. “It is a great honor to protect the legacy that Janet Mills has created, and to bring these classic titles into the future.”

“Since 2018, Penguin Random House has been our trusted partner in selling and distributing our titles. Their sales force and dedicated team of publishing professionals have done an outstanding job representing our list,” Mills added, in a statement. “Now, I'm delighted to announce that Penguin Group’s TarcherPerigee imprint will take over the publishing and marketing of our titles. Their passionate team will bring new opportunities and resources to support our titles on a larger scale, ensuring they continue to thrive for many years to come.”

The Amber-Allen purchase continues a buying spree at PRH that began when its deal to buy Simon & Schuster fell through. Earlier this year, the publisher bought Boom! Studios and completed the purchase of Hay House, a deal that was announced in late December.
