In the run-up to its October 7 release, Rick Riordan’s Blood of Olympus was the most-talked-about book on social media in August. Olympus, the fifth title in the author’s Heroes of Olympus series, ousted the previous month’s most-talked-about book, Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James.
“Conversation on [Fifty Shades] was driven by fans discussing the movie trailer,” said Jeff Costello, v-p of CoverCake, a company that tracks how books are faring on social media. The film adaptation of Fifty Shades is due out February 13.
In an unusual twist, social media buzz about the top book this month was driven by men, who generated 58% of commentary about Olympus. Men also initiated the majority of conversations about The Strain, by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, which came in at #7. The online chatter about the other titles in the list was dominated by women, as is typical.
Thanks to the August 22 release of the film adaptation of Gayle Forman’s 2009 novel, If I Stay , it landed at #3 last month. New to the list is Oprah Winfrey’s What I Know for Sure at #6—the title was released on September 2.
