Book awards season is upon us and a number of organizations and programs have already announced several exciting wins in June.
ForeWord Magazine’s INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards, presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco on June 26, honored multiple titles each from Abingdon, Lion Fiction, and Wisdom: several other spirituality and religion publishers also had books recognized.
Revell title The Pelican Bride by Beth White was winner of a Cover Café Award for book cover art in the historical category; Thomas Nelson won in the contemporary category for Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble.
The INSPYs, awarded by book bloggers to honor Christian fiction, were announced June 28. Winners in seven categories were Bethany House, Tyndale, and Thomas Nelson with two awards apiece; the seventh went to Hachette imprint Center Street.
Winners of the Golden Scroll Awards of the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (AWSA) were announced June 28 at the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) in Orlando, Fla. Awards were given for publisher, editor, and fiction editor of the year, as well as for books in both fiction and nonfiction categories. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Jerry B. Jenkins.
The Christian Retailing’s Best Awards were announced June 30 at ICRS. The top winner was B&H Publishing Group, with 20 awards; Abingdon Press won seven awards and Lighthouse Christian Products won four.
The Association of Logos Bookstores Book of the Year Awards were announced at the association’s annual meeting at ICRS. The top book was The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life by Rick Warren, Daniel Amen, and Mark Hyman (Zondervan). InterVarsity Press took three awards.
Baker Academic title A New Heaven and a New Earth: Reclaiming Biblical Eschatology by J. Richard Middleton won in the biblical studies category of the Word Awards, which recognize achievements by Canadian writers who are Christian.
Two new Bible projects were recently announced:
Baker Publishing Group, under an agreement with the Messianic Jewish Family Bible Society (MJFB), will publish in 2016 a new Bible translation, the Tree of Life Version (TLV). The project was announced at the Messiah Conference, June 28–July 4 in Grantham, Penn. Thirty-two Messianic Jewish and Christian scholars will produce the translation, which, according to Baker, captures the original Hebrew and Greek text, with Hebrew transliterations throughout; it also restores the Jewish order of the Old Testament books. Baker will publish an e-book edition of the Tree of Life Version (TLV) Holy Bible in celebration of the inaugural Tree of Life Version Theology Summit and Bible Conference, August 6–7 in Dallas,Tex.
HarperCollins Christian Publishing is partnering with BibleMesh and Kairos Journal. HCCP will use online theological content from the sites to create a variety of study Bibles in different translations.The first study Bible in the line, to be published by HCCP’s Zondervan division using BibleMesh content, will release in 2017, followed by a second Bible using Kairos Journal content. Additional products will follow.
