Tyndale Cooks With 'SuperChef'
Food Network host and restauranteur Darnell 'SuperChef' Ferguson, will release his first book, SuperChef Family Cookbook, with Tyndale House in fall 2023. He is represented by Eric Bentley, managing partner for Ferguson's SuperChef Kitchens, Productions and Hospitality Group. Linda Howard, associate publisher for children and youth, acquired world and translation rights. The superhero-themed cookbook of kid-friendly recipes also includes Ferguson's life story of experiencing homelessness and legal troubles before turning to faith in God and finding success as a chef.
Broadleaf Title Looks at Jan. 6 'Spiritual Warfare '
Broadleaf Books acquisitions editor Valerie Weaver-Zercher has purchased world rights to The Violent Take It by Force: Spiritual Warfare, Charismatic Evangelicals, and the Making of the Capitol Riot by Matthew D. Taylor, a scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies. Bridget Matzie of Aevitas Creative Management brokered the deal, with publication planned for fall 2024. Taylor—creator of Charismatic Revival Fury, an audio documentary on the Straight White American Jesus podcast—traces how the independent charismatic movement and its combative spiritual warfare model provided a theological basis for Trumpism and the January 6 insurrection, according to Broadleaf.
Grief, Loss Book to Revell
Debbie Alsdorf of Books & Such Literary Management sold world rights to acquisition editor Rachel McRae of Revell Books for Chelsea Ohlemiller's The Day She Died: Living with Grief and Significant Loss. Ohlemiller offers thoughts on loss, love, healing, and hope—which she also shares on her blog/website Hope and Harsh Realities. The release date for the book is August 2024.
Prophecy Author Giles' Book to Chosen
Jevon Bolden of Embolden Media Group has negotiated a two-book, world rights deal for speaker, pastor, and bestselling author Joshua Giles to Kim Bangs, editorial director at Chosen Books. The first title, set for April 2024, is Prophetic Reset: 40 Days to Aligning with God's Plan for Your Life, a follow-up to last year's title, Prophetic Forecast. The second book’s title and release date are to be decided.
WaterBrook Addresses Shame in New Title
Susan Tjaden, executive editor at WaterBrook, acquired world rights from Keely Boeving of WordServe Literary to two nonfiction books by Dr. Zoe Shaw, a psychotherapist, author, and podcast host. Reckon with Her pairs Shaw’s story of teenage pregnancy and her experience of shame and offers insights for women to escape shame, forgive themselves, and transform their relationships. A fall 2024 publication date is planned; a second untitled book is scheduled for spring 2026.
Apples & Honey Buys Two Matzah Tales
Dena Neusner, executive editor at Apples & Honey Press, purchased two Passover-themed titles for 2024. First is Matzah Man by Eric Kimmel, five-time winner of the National Jewish Book Award. Jennifer Laughran of Andrea Brown Literary Agency negotiated the world rights sale for the chapter book for ages 6-8 about a superhero helping families around the world avert all manner of Passover disasters. Illustrations are by Charlie Fowkes. The second book is Matzah Ball Chase, a rhyming picture book for ages 3-6 by Children’s Book Counsel award winner Rachelle Burk, who represented herself in the world-rights deal. Brittany Larkin will illustrate. Both illustrators are represented by Lucy Craig of the Plum Agency.
Chronicle Alights on a Menorah Tale
Associate editor Daria Harper at Chronicle Children's has acquired world rights to Lost & Found Hanukkah by Joy Preble, with Lisa Anchin to illustrate for fall 2025. It features a boy who misses his former home and the Hanukkah menorah lost in the move, until he discovers that, like the story of the holiday, everything in his new home can be made right, according to the publisher. Jennifer Rofé at Andrea Brown Literary Agency represented the author and Andrea Morrison at Writers House represented the illustrator.
