Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) stands as one of the most tragic, enigmatic figures in photography, a wunderkind who burst on the scene seemingly fully-formed at age 15, and worked primarily with self-portraiture to explore, and explode, conventional ideas of photography, identiy, and self-revelation. Woodman committed suicide at age 22, leaving the art world with seven years of work that continues to fascinate. On December 31, San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art releases a catalog of their current Woodman retrospective, America's first in more than 20 years. Here, SFMOMA shares a few of Woodman's photos with the Tip Sheet.
