In its twelfth year, the summer educational program, The Great Books Summer Program will expand to England with a program at The University of Oxford. Previously, Great Books has hosted some 800 students housed at Amherst College (Amherst, MA) and Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA). With many students traveling to these campuses from abroad—last year bringing students from 27 different countries— the creation of the Oxford program is the first of several planned expansions for Great Books at colleges around the world.
The program is a multi-week series centering on the discussion of themes in classic and contemporary literature that serves students in grades 6-12. The Great Books Summer Program uses the Socratic Method to help students recognize their own best thoughts, to develop their ideas with care, and practice reflective reading and critical thinking.
This year's guests include James Blaylock, Jamie Byn, Da Chen, Andre Dubus III, Yiyun Li, Jane Smiley, and Joesph J. Ellis.
