Recent months have seen Klopotek investing in architectural changes related to the hosting of its software. “This is a part of our strategy to help publishers to move to the cloud,” says CTO and designated CEO Peter Karwowski, whose team now offers Klopotek Private Cloud, with flexible resources for larger publishing companies, and Klopotek Public Cloud, with preconfigured processes in a shared environment. “The goal is to become a full-service provider—and not just an app-producing company—for publishers while offering a wide variety of solutions to suit their needs.”
For Brill Publishers, the move to Klopotek Private Cloud makes perfect sense. “We have really ambitious plans to become a data-driven company, and moving to the Private Cloud has helped us to achieve that,” says Bas Baas, v-p of technology at Brill. “Switching to Klopotek Stream web apps is another essential step forward. The move enables us to focus on our core business instead of managing everything by ourselves. It was not only cost-neutral but also cost-efficient. Ramping up becomes much easier as there are no hardware investments, such as for testing purposes, that have to be made if we do them ourselves.”
While moving to Private Cloud is akin to renting a house that you have all to yourself, the Public Cloud is a multi-tenanted option. As the infrastructure is shared in the latter, the services offered are usually more cost-efficient. And this fits the needs of Erik van Aalst, CFO at WPG Uitgevers Group. “We were looking for a system that could help us to further harmonize our business processes—that could return the data we put into it as valuable information so that we can react quickly and decisively to market changes,” van Aalst says. “And we wanted this to be safe and cost-effective and to happen without the need to complete a long and expensive implementation and migration project. Klopotek Public Cloud makes all of this possible.”
Onboarding of Public Cloud is easy through a free four-week trial period of a fully configured system with personal customer support. “We also have special offers for members of selected publishers organizations as a part of our efforts to support small and independent publishers with state-of-the-art services and applications,” Karwowski says. “The bottom line is this: we see a clear trend among clients to move from on-premise installations to cloud-based solutions—which are more agile, cost-effective, flexible, scalable, and secure—and Klopotek is here to help.”
Security is something that Klopotek takes very seriously. “We are constantly checking our cloud services for any weaknesses, and we have reliable partners for our services and data centers, such as DCSO, NTT Global Data Centers, and Cologix,” says Karwowski, who has also partnered with Amsterdam-based Link-Busters on digital piracy to protect publishers, authors, and works. “We believe that the approach taken by Link-Busters is very effective and agile in fighting piracy and adapting to new needs in the industry. It is a kind of cyber-policing for publishers and authors that we are happy to support and promote to our clients.”
Klopotek Stream apps, which remain the focus of the company’s software development, are available to publishers on both the Private Cloud and the Public Cloud options. “The new Calculation Manager app, for instance, addresses both editorial and production needs to plan more strategically and cost-effectively amid the growing pressures of inflation and supply chain disruptions as well as the need to be more environmentally sustainable,” says Karwowski, whose team has also added Scheduling and Notification Dashboard apps to the offerings.
The University of Wales Press (UWP) is Klopotek’s first U.K.-based cloud customer to fully transition to its Stream technology. “The plan is to get the whole team using Klopotek Stream so that it can be that one source for all our data even though right now it is mostly about metadata and royalties for the production and finance departments,” says Chris Richards, journals and assistant commission editor at UWP.
Presentations with Link-Busters and Publisher Consultants on piracy and sustainability, respectively, will be held at Klopotek booth H69 in Hall 3.0. Time and date to be determined.
