After realigning its international sales team to put a major emphasis on Spanish-language territories earlier this summer, Penguin Group is stepping up its focus on the Latin American market. It has just appointed Jacqueline Fischetti, who had been director of Penguin’s speakers bureau, to the newly-created position of director of content development, international. Fischetti will launch an international expansion program that will bring Penguin’s English-language titles to the Latin American market in the U.S., targeting adult and YA readers who are at various levels of learning English.

A release from Penguin said one of the initiative’s goals will be to categorizes books into levels of difficulty, so readers can find books that are in line with their level of English. The company also said it will be conducting research to find which subject areas Latin American readers are interested in.

Penguin Group CEO David Shanks said the new program is “part of our international strategy. It gives us the opportunity to capitalize on a growing demand for the development of English-language skills around the world, an important step as we continue to gain a foothold in these emerging markets and identify a new generation of customers.”

Fischetti has been with Penguin since 1999. In 2006, she took the speakers bureau job.
