New fiction on France’s March list included Harlan Coben’s Caught, the first two volumes of Stephen King’s Under the Dome, and Patricia Cornwell’s Port Mortuary. Also debuting was Katarina Mazetti’s The Family Vault, a sequel to the Swedish journalist’s Guy in the Grave Next Door, which sold 450,000 copies in Sweden. Sarah’s Key author Tatiana de Rosnay’s novel Rose was also a new addition to the French list. On the nonfiction side, serious new works led the list, including Off: What Nicolas Sarkozy Was Not Supposed to Tell Us by Maurice Szafran and Nicolas Domenach, Get Involved! by Stéphane Hessel and Gilles Vanderpooten, The Black Book of Agriculture: How They Kill Our Farmers, Our Health and the Environment by Isabelle Saporta, and Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection by Pope Benedict XVI.
Haruki Murakami led Spain’s fiction list in March; his 1Q84 was up from the second spot last month. Spanish writer Alicia Giménez Bartlett’s Where Nobody Will Find You debuted at #6; the author is known for her detective series, but won Spain’s prestigious Nadal Prize for this book, a historical thriller. On Spain’s nonfiction list, Tony Judt, a British historian who specialized in European history and died in 2010, debuted at #3 with The Memory Chalet, a collection of essays.
Sweden’s March list had plenty of new fiction, too. Leading off was Mario Vargas Llosa with The Bad Girl, followed by Jean M. Auel’s The Land of Painted Caves. Michael Connolly’s The Scarecrow also debuted on Sweden’s list.
