Mysteries led the way in new books hitting international bestsellers lists in June, especially in the land of the mystery, Sweden. Criminal defense lawyer and author Jens Lapidus landed at #2 in Sweden last month with the final volume in its Stockholm Noir trilogy, Life Deluxe. Lapidus will make his American debut in November when Pantheon publishes Easy Money, the first in the trilogy, and the house has rights to the two other volumes. The author coming in just behind Lapidus in June was Mon Kallentoft with The Fifth Season, the fifth volume in his Inspector Malin Fors series. Although Kallentoft is developing an international following, he has yet to be published in the U.S.
Five of the six top-selling titles on Italy's combined list in June were new, led by the latest from the international bestselling author Carlos Ruiz Zafón, September Lights. Coming in at #6 is Forever, the newest general romance from Italian novelist Susan Tamaro, whose Follow Your Heart sold 15 million copies worldwide when it was released in the mid-1990s. It was published in the U.S. by Nan Talese in 1995.
The top of the combined chart in the Netherlands was held by Blue Monday, from Nicci French, the pseudonym of English husband-and-wife writing team Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. The thriller will be published in March in the U.S. by Pamela Dorman Books. The second and third bestsellers in Holland were also new to the list, including at #3 The Lance Factor, a biography of Lance Armstrong, still a well-known figure in the cycling-mad country.
