Coinciding with his debut in the U.S., Danish bestseller Jussi Adler-Olsen landed in the top spot in Germany in July with Message in a Bottle, while an earlier novel, The Pheasant Killers, jumped to #2 from the seventh spot. The official pub date in the U.S. for The Keeper of Lost Causes from Dutton is August 23, and Dutton has the rights to Adler-Olsen's second title in the Department Q series. Keeper is the first in Adler-Olsen's Department Q series, which features the flawed Insp. Carl Mock. PW gave Keeper a starred review, and the book was the subject of a flattering Galley Talk piece in the July 11 issue.
Another author with two books in the top 10 in a major market is Dutch author Simone van der Vlugt, whose newest thriller, In My Dreams, debuted at #3 in the Netherlands, while The Reunion returned to the list in the seventh spot. Reunion was van der Vlugt's first adult novel after writing several young adult titles. She is beginning to get some English-language exposure with Shadow Sisters, recently published by Harper in the U.K. The top-selling fiction title in the Netherlands in July was Karin Slaughter's Fallen.
Australian author Kate Morton made it onto the Spanish bestseller list in July in the third spot with The Forgotten Garden. Morton is published in the U.S. by Simon & Schuster, and her most recent novel, the romantic thriller The Distant Hours (which received a PW star), was published in paperback in July by Washington Square Press. Just ahead of Forgotten Garden last month in Spain was George R.R. Martin's A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 5, which didn't take long to become an international bestseller, including a blockbuster start in the U.S.
