The European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF) has published its 2024-2029 Manifesto ahead of the upcoming European elections, which will take place from June 6-9. The manifesto, released following World Book Day and the last European Parliament plenary session of the 2019-2024 political term, outlines six priority topics that will guide EIBF's work in representing booksellers' interests in the coming years.
In announcing the manifesto, EIBF co-president Jean-Luc Treutenaere emphasized the unique role of bookshops in democratic societies. "Not only are bookshops local businesses that benefit the local economy, they are also cultural hubs and meeting points for people and ideas, simultaneously upholding the fundamental right to freedom of expression and fostering empathy and tolerance through books and stories," he said.
The six priorities outlined in the manifesto are:
1. Standing up for freedom of expression by upholding the freedoms to express, publish, and disseminate ideas, books, and cultural materials while acting against all forms of censorship.
2. Standing up for literacy by calling for initiatives that promote reading to enable well-informed, democratic participation in society.
3. Embracing digital technologies by advocating for progressive, innovative, and balanced digital legislation that protects SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises).
4. Embracing the green economy by supporting green policies and initiatives that empower and support booksellers throughout their environmental transition.
5. Maintaining freedom for small businesses by defending booksellers' freedom to make well-informed decisions to ensure the viability of their businesses for all readers.
6. Maintaining bookselling as a viable and desirable career path by encouraging policies and initiatives that acknowledge, support, and invest in both high-street businesses and a new generation of booksellers and readers.
The intent of the manifesto, according to the EIBF, is to amplify the voice of booksellers, enabling bookshops worldwide to continue providing welcoming spaces where people can meet, exchange ideas, and celebrate cultural diversity through stories and literature.
