Geoff Shandler at Little, Brown has acquired a new book by Michael Hastings, the author of the explosive article in Rolling Stone, "The Runaway General." The currently untitled book, which Shandler bought from Scott Moyers at the Wylie Agency, will offer a longer look at the war in Afghanistan, pulling from the journalist's behind-the-scenes reporting in the Middle East, Europe, and Washington, D.C.
Hastings's Rolling Stone piece, which directly led to the firing of its subject, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, set off a firestorm in Washington and also a surge in coverage about Hastings himself, with a number of news outlets running stories on the freelance journalist. Speaking to the new book, LB publisher Michael Pietsch said it "will take us deeper and further into the war and its major architects at a time when we need that clarity desperately.”
