As reported in the European publishing press, Finnish publishing house Bonnier Books has acquired WSOY, Finland’s largest general trade book publisher, from Sonoma, strengthening Bonnier’s general publishing list in Finland. As part of the acquisition, Sonoma has acquired Bonnier Learning in Sweden and Tammi Learning from Bonnier. The deal allows both publishers to focus on their core business areas.
The deal is seen as part of Bonnier’s plans to expand its reach into the Finnish publishing market. Bonnier reported sales of 55 million euros in 2010 and Sonoma reported 2010 sales of 249 million euros. WSOY had sales of 32.5 million euros in 2010; Bonnier Education had 2010 sales of 17.6 million euros and Tammi Learning reported 2010 sales of 10.2 million euros. The deal is subject to approval by regulatory agencies.
