The 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair opened on November 6 and will run through November 17, offering booths from 2,523 publishers and exhibitors from 108 countries and close to 1,400 literary and creative events. The fair will feature over 85 Emirati and Arab authors and 49 international guests from 14 countries, including U.K. influencer Steven Bartlett, Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, and American thriller writer Tess Gerritsen.
That said, the SIBF is only one event in which the Emirate of Sharjah, through the Sharjah Book Authority, has been showcased around the world. Recent events where Sharjah has been featured, include:
Guest of Honor at Thessaloniki Book Fair
In May 2024 Sharjah made history as the first Arab Guest of Honour at the Thessaloniki International Book Fair. With participation led by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), the Emirate presented a vibrant cultural programme with over 25 events featuring esteemed Emirati and Greek authors, along with more than 20 prominent cultural and tourist entities. This participation underscored Sharjah’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue and highlighted its role as a global hub for literature and culture. Sharjah’s involvement included panel discussions, artistic exhibitions and live performances, showcasing the deep connections between Greek and Arab cultures. The Emirate’s presence at the fair not only celebrated its rich heritage but also reinforced its growing influence in the global publishing industry.
Guadalajara Book Fair
Following its distinguished role as Guest of Honour at the 36th Guadalajara International Book Fair in 2022, Sharjah was delighted to attend the 37th edition of Latin America’s leading literary event in November 2023 to reaffirm its commitment to building bridges between nations. The role of the SBA, who organised participation, was pivotal in facilitating meetings with Latin American publishers and exploring collaborations, including at future editions of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) and Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF).
Cairo International Book Fair
Sharjah’s attendance at the 2024 Cairo International Book Fair in January allowed the SBA to unveil new Emirati titles and highlight its ongoing cultural projects aimed at advancing the global publishing industry and promoting literary pursuits. During the event, the SBA presented a signed copy of the Sharjah Ruler’s latest work to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Culture Minister Niveen El-Kilany also receiving copies. This gesture emphasized Sharjah’s dedication to fostering cultural exchange and strengthening ties between the U.A.E. and Egypt.
New Delhi World Book Fair
At the 51st New Delhi World Book Fair in February 2024 the SBA led discussions on the future of global publishing and showcased its contributions to the industry, as well as highlighting Emirati and Arab literature translated into Hindi, and engaging with international publishers to foster cultural exchange and collaboration.
London Book Fair
At the London International Book Fair in March 2024, the SBA took the opportunity to highlight the Emirate’s extensive projects aimed at supporting both local and international publishing sectors. The event provided a platform for Sharjah to present key initiatives, including the SIBF and various conferences which are instrumental in enhancing cultural cooperation and supporting publishers and translators worldwide.
Bologna Children’s Book Fair
At the 61st Bologna Children’s Book Fair, held in April 2024, the SBA lead a delegation showcasing the vibrant cultural scene of Sharjah and its initiatives to support Arab authors, illustrators and publishers. The Sharjah pavilion featured key cultural entities, including Al Qasimi Publications and the Arab Children’s Book Publisher Forum, emphasizing the Emirate’s role in fostering global collaborations and cultural exchange.
Seoul International Book Fair
At the 2024 Seoul International Book Fair in June 2024 the SBA pavilion served as a vibrant center for cultural exchange, presenting Sharjah’s notable events such as the SIBF and SCRF to over 350 Korean publishers and 180 authors.
ALA Conference, San Diego
At the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference & Exhibition in June 2024 the SBA engaged with ALA representatives on initiatives to enhance library management and lifelong learning and promoted the Sharjah International Library Conference taking place in November 2024; this conference brings together global professionals to discuss trends and policies shaping the future of libraries.
