Feiffer at the Strand
Jules Feiffer will be appearing at the Strand on Thursday May 15th for the premiere of his book Explainers, a collection of his Village Voice strips from 1956-66. Feiffer will give a drawing presentation, read some of his strips, and read excerpts from his upcoming memoir. Feiffer will also be signing copies of Explainers. The event starts at 7 p.m. The Strand is located at 828 Broadway at 12th Street in Manhattan. More information can be found at the Fantagraphics’ website

Manga by the Navy
The U.S. Navy has created a manga to distribute in Japan to prepare for the arrival of the USS George Washington at the Yokosuka Naval Base in August. The manga, aimed at 10 to 30 year olds, is meant to qualm uneasiness and controversy over the battleship’s arrival. Japanese artists Harumi Sato and Hiroshi Kazusa drew the manga. The story in the manga revolves around Jack Ohara, a third-class petty officer, who is a little nervous about going to Japan on his first assignment, and his adventures give an overview of life on the carrier. PWCW Needs Interns!
Several opportunities are available for internships at PWCW. Requirements include basic writing and editing skillls and working knowledge of the comics industry. There is no pay but there are opportunities to write articles for pay. We need individuals who love and understand comics; who are interested in journalism and writing about comics and want to learn more about the business of publishing. Regular duties include being in the office at least 2 days each week, handling both incoming and outgoing mail, tracking stories and reviews, contacting publishers for galleys and compiling the weekly Comics Briefs and On Sale Calendar. Other duties include writing a variety of stories depending your writing skills and working the PW booth at local comics conventions. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about trade journalism and polish your writing skills. New Katy Keene GN
Archie Comics is releasing a Katy Keene graphic novel. The classic 19040’s character was brought back in 2005 through a Free Comics Day comic, and then began appearing in Archie and Friends. The new Katy Keene comics are written and drawn by Andrew Pepoy. The modernized Katy Keene is not only a fashion model, but also an actress and singer. The Katy Keene GN collects all the stories from Archie and Friends along with a new story. The graphic novel will be released on August 13, and it is 112 full color pages.

PW The Beat: Gene Colan Ill; Speed Racer
The Beat’s Heidi MacDonald takes note of the serious illness of legendary comics artist Gene Colan; and takes on reviewers (and their bad reviews) of the Wachowski Brothers new film, Speed Racer.

The News in Comics
The Columbia Journalism Review has an interview on it’s website with the New York Times reporter, Campbell Robertson, who made his coverage of the North Carolina Democratic Primary into cartoon strips. The interview covers Robertson’s process for making the comics.

Lynda Barry in NYT
The New York Times has an article, “How to Think Like a Surreal Cartoonist,” spotlighting Lynda Barry. The article explores the ups and downs of her life as an artist and cartoonists, her upcoming books, and her workshop, “Writing the Unthinkable.”

Mother’s Day Comic in NYT
Celebrating Mother’s Day, The New York Times has a cartoon page on it’s website by Jillian and Mariko Tamaki about trips to the graveyard on Mother’s Day to visit their grandmother’s grave.
