BookPeople CEO Steve Bercu to Retire
Steve Bercu, a former president of the American Booksellers Association and CEO of the Austin, Texas bookstore, BookPeople, will retire from the store in June.
Bercu will retire in June after nearly 20 years as CEO of BookPeople. Bercu was instrumental in raising the national profile of the Austin, Texas bookstore, as well as a renewed interest in independent local bookselling.
As part of this restructuring, Elizabeth Jordan has been named general manager, and will oversee day to day operations of the store. Jordan has worked at BookPeople since 2002 in a variety of roles. In addition, Consuelo Wilder, formerly a sales floor manager, has been named adult book buyer and inventory operations supervisor.
Bercu was named PW’s Bookseller of the Year in 2005. During his tenue as ABA president, Bercu was credited with expanding a variety of publisher/bookstore programs such as rapid replenishment, simplying coop, and terms for payment.
