DC’s Young Animal Returns with Doom Patrol and More
DC’s Young Animal, a pop up comics imprint launched and curated by pop music star Gerard Way, is returning with new Doom Patrol stories, and the comics debut of acclaimed science fiction novelist N.K. Jemisin.
The revived Young Animal line will debut three series beginning in July with a restart of the quirky superhero franchise Doom Patrol: Weight of the World, once again written by Way with art by Nick Derington; to be followed in July by Collapser by Mikey Way, Shaun Simon and artist Ilias Kyriazis, the story of a DJ transformed into a superhero; and Far Sector by acclaimed novelist N.K. Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell, a new Green Lantern series that will debut in late 2019.
Launched in 2016 under the direction of Way, lead vocalist of the band My Chemical Romance and a veteran comics writer and editor, DC’s Young Animal imprint focused on publishing a line of eccentric superhero series aimed at new generation of comics readers.
The line was folded in 2018 after launching new versions of Doom Patrol (written by Way and art by Nick Derington), Shade the Changing Girl (written by YA novelist Cecil Castellucci with art by Marley Zarcone), as well as new series Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye (written by Way and Jon Rivera, with art by Michael Avon Oeming), and Mother Panic, written by Jody Houser.
Way said “we are thrilled to revitalize Doom Patrol, and to present both Collapser and Far Sector, two books that push the medium of comics and their respective genres through uncharted territory.”
“Readers can expect everything from high doses of cosmic weirdness and positivity, to deep examinations of anxiety and emotions while wielding immense power, to sci-fi explorations of authority and control and what it means to be a guardian while a world hangs in delicate balance. More fantastic comics outside the norm,” Way said.
