‘Upgrade Soul’ to Release New Graphic Novel App, Vinyl Soundtrack
Upgrade Soul, Ezra Clayton Daniels’s acclaimed 2018 sci-fi graphic novel, will be re-released this month as an upgraded multimedia app alongside a new vinyl release of the work’s soundtrack, which was composed by Alexis Gideon.
The new Upgrade Soul iOS multimedia app will be released October 25.
Originally conceived and released as an iOS app in 2012 (with 3D glasses and unlockable embedded content), the book was reformatted for print and published to critical acclaimed by Lion Forge in 2018. The app was designed by multimedia artist Erik Loyer.
The new Upgrade Soul iOS graphic novel app will benefit from the ongoing advance in app technology. In addition Gideon’s ethereal soundtrack will be released by FPE Records in a regular black vinyl edition and a limited and signed deluxe edition (100 copies) in translucent orange vinyl.
Upgrade Soul is the story of an elderly interracial couple who volunteer for an experiment to rejuvenate their bodies, in a bizarre procedure that produces disfigured but intellectually superior clones of themselves. The disastrous results of the procedure offer a meditation on the nature of identity and social presumptions about race, gender and age. The book was awarded the Dwayne McDuffie Diversity Award in Comics.
The new Upgrade Soul app offers the first chapter for free. During October the full story can be unlocked for $6.99 and beginning in November it will cost $7.99. A preview of the app is available on YouTube.
