Yen Press to Publish the ‘Weathering With You’ Novel
Yen Press announced plans to publish an English translation of Weathering With You, a novel written by Makoto Shinkai, who is also director of the 2019 hit romantic fantasy anime that the forthcoming novel is based on. The book will be published December 17.
Published in Japan the day before the theatrical release of the anime version, the Weathering With You novel is the story of a high school boy from a small island who runs away to Tokyo, which is inundated by rain and relentlessly gloomy weather. But on the rain-drenched streets of Tokyo, the boy encounters a mysterious young girl who appears to have the ability to manipulate the weather, stop the rain, clear the sky and flood the city with sunshine.
The anime version of Weathering With You was a hit film in Japan and an English version of the anime is slated to be released in the U.S. in 2020.
In addition to directing the anime and writing the novel based on it, Mako Shinkai is also the director of the acclaimed and wildly popular Your Name, a body-switching romantic fantasy anime first released in Japan in 2016.
